Aogai (青貝 [aogai])
Aogai means “blue shell,” referring to iridescent shell material (often abalone-type nacre) used in raden (螺鈿 [raden]). It is valued for strong color play without relying on metallic shine. Aogai is commonly used as sheet inlay or as fragments, then sealed under clear lacquer and polished flush.
