Rankaku

Rankaku is decoration using eggshell fragments set into lacquer. The shell creates a pale, fractured mosaic effect that can contrast strongly with black or colored lacquer grounds. The fragments are placed, sealed, leveled, and polished so the surface becomes smooth while preserving the broken-shell pattern.
