Akebono / Akebono-nuri (曙 / 曙塗 [akebono / akebono-nuri])

Akebono means dawn, and in lacquerwork it usually describes a controlled gradation, most classically red fading into black, brown, or yellow. It overlaps with bokashi, but functions as a named aesthetic rather than a single fixed recipe: the surface should feel like light emerging through the lacquer rather than a hard color boundary.

Good akebono depends on viscosity, timing, layer thickness, and edge control. It is especially effective on curved forms such as caps, finials, and rim zones, where the shape helps the transition read naturally.
