Shitaji

Shitaji is the foundation system of urushi work: the ground layers that prepare, strengthen, and level the substrate before visible lacquer coats are applied. A good shitaji controls absorption, movement, surface strength, and long-term durability, so it is often more important to the life of an object than the decorative layers above it.
