Tamenuri

A lacquer technique which involves applying transparent urushi (suki-urushi) or a semi-transparent kuro-urushi over a coloured layer. The coloured layer, typically vermillion (in aka-tamenuri and kuro-tamenuri), is visible through the layers of transparent lacquer which frequently becomes more transparent with age and use. Literally: pool painting.
