Tamenuri

Tamenuri is a lacquer technique where transparent or semi-transparent urushi is applied over a colored ground, often red or brown-black. The lower color remains visible through the upper layers, creating depth that changes with light, layer thickness, age, and polishing. Good tamenuri feels optical rather than painted: the color seems to sit inside the lacquer.
