Sumiko-shiage
Sumiko-shiage is a finishing technique using a paste of charcoal powder and urushi to create a matte or semi-matte black surface with fine granular texture. It is useful for quiet black-on-black effects and can serve as a subdued ground for decoration such as maki-e.
