Age-nuri (上げ塗り / 上げ漆 [age-nuri / age-urushi])
“Age-nuri” is the final “raising” stage in layered regional techniques (notably Tsugaru-nuri (津軽塗)): once the patterned or colored layers are built and stabilized, additional lacquer layers are applied to build thickness, improve clarity, and create a surface that can be properly leveled and polished. Think of it as the “optical finishing stack” that turns a textured construction into something durable and polishable. In practice, this is where you stop chasing pattern and start chasing surface integrity: evenness, defect control, and polish response.
