Hake is “brush,” the standard Japanese term for brushes used to apply urushi and related coatings. Different hake types are chosen for specific viscosity, surface size, and finish goals, from smooth coats to intentional stroke texture. Proper cleaning and de-oiling are essential to prevent contamination and defects.
