Yoshino-gami

Yoshino-gami is a thin, strong Japanese paper used for filtering urushi and sometimes for reinforcement work. For filtering, lacquer can be wrapped and squeezed through the paper by hand, or pressed with a koshiki when the quantity makes a tool more practical.

The number of paper layers and the sheet size should be matched to both the amount and the type of urushi being filtered. For critical coats, especially final or high-clarity layers, double filtration is common and triple filtration may be worth using when maximum cleanliness matters.
