A decorative technique that involves cutting a design into a lacquered surface, applying a thin layer of urushi into the incisions and applying gold leaf, gold dust, or coloured powders into the still tacky urushi to create a contrast with the ground. Lit. sunken gold. Tools used are chisels of different shapes and sizes (Chinkin-nomi)
