Chinkin (沈金 [chinkin])
Chinkin is “sunken gold”: a design is carved or incised into cured lacquer, urushi is worked into the cuts, and gold leaf or powder is applied so the decoration sits below the surface. The result is crisp, durable linework mechanically keyed into the lacquer film. Chinkin emphasizes tool control, line quality, and clean carving rather than raised relief.
