Tonoko

Tonoko is a fine polishing and foundation powder used in urushi work, traditionally associated with clay or finely ground stone. It can be used in polishing stages such as dozuri and in some foundation mixtures. Particle size and cleanliness matter: contaminated or mismatched tonoko can leave scratches, cloud the surface, or interfere with later polishing.
